The Qanibay al-Saifi Mosque was built in 908 AH (1502 AD) by Prince Qanibay al-Saifi, the Prince of Akhor, during the reign of Sultan Qansuh al-Ghouri (1501–1516). Located beneath the Citadel on the seaside of Muhammad Ali Square, the mosque features a notable mausoleum in its southeast courtyard corner, accessible through a dedicated doorway. This chamber houses the tomb of its founder, beneath a dome adorned on its exterior with finely carved stone vegetal motifs. The current restoration project aims to preserve and revive the mosque’s original architectural beauty, guided by historical references. The works include the restoration and maintenance of both external and internal façades, architectural elements, the roof, and the floors, ensuring the conservation of its unique decorative features for future generations.
