The mosque was built during the Fatimid era in 549 AH (1154 AD) under the supervision of Minister Al-Saleh Tala’i. The mosque includes 3 doors built of white marble overlooking Khan Al-Khalili, and another door near the dome known as the Green Door. The mosque was named after this according to the narratives of Egyptian historians about the presence of the head of Hussein bin Ali buried in it. The building was renewed during the time of Abbas I and Khedive Ismail, and no traces from the Fatimid era remained in this mosque except for the Green Door only. As for the mosque’s minaret, it is the work of Abu Al-Qasim Al-Sukkari in 633 AH (1235 AD). The famous Islamic engineer Abdul Rahman Katkhuda also built the dome and the upper part of the Green Door minaret in 1185 AH (1861 AD). In 1893, a small room was created inside the mosque that includes some prophetic relics. The mosque was restored and developed in 2021-2022 with a total value.
