Built by Sultan Hassan ibn al-Nasir Muhammad ibn Qalawun between 1356 and 1362 CE, this mosque is considered one of the most architecturally significant and monumental mosques in Egypt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The octagonal fountain dome features a circular canopy and adorns the open central courtyard of the complex. The mosque is featured on the Egyptian 100-pound note and has been visited by numerous world leaders, including former U.S. President Barack Obama in 2009.
