Aqbughawiyya Dome

The Aqbughawiyya School Restoration project addressed one of the oldest Mamluk schools in Cairo, renowned for its connection to Al-Azhar Mosque. Located to the north of Al-Azhar’s main western entrance, the school represented the jewel of adjacent educational institutions and enjoyed continuous attention from students of knowledge throughout its history. It was famous among Cairo’s residents for teaching and disseminating sciences, particularly the Shafi’i and Hanafi schools of Islamic jurisprudence, attracting students from across Egypt. Over time, the school suffered from the effects of aging. Khedive Ismail ordered its renovation and restoration. The school was subsequently restored again in 2022-2023 as part of ongoing efforts to preserve Cairo’s Islamic architectural heritage, ensuring this historic educational institution continues to serve its cultural and scholarly role for future generations.
