Sultan Hassan Mosque Fountain

The Sultan Hassan Mosque Fountain Restoration and Structural Stabilization project addressed the repair of the historic ablution dome (qubba al-wudu) located in the central courtyard of the Mosque and Madrasa of Sultan Hassan. Built by Sultan Hassan ibn al-Nasir Muhammad ibn Qalawun between 1356 and 1362 CE, this mosque is considered one of the most architecturally significant and monumental mosques in Egypt. The octagonal fountain dome features a circular canopy and adorns the open central courtyard of the complex. The mosque is featured on the Egyptian 100-pound note and has been visited by numerous world leaders, including former U.S. President Barack Obama in 2009. Following the partial collapse of one of the fountain’s structural elements, MCG carried out comprehensive restoration and danger mitigation works to preserve this iconic monument.
