Bab Zuweila Development Project

Bab Zuweila, built in 485 AH during the tenure of Minister Badr al-Din al-Gamali under the reign of the Fatimid Caliph al-Mustansir Billah, is one of Cairo’s eight historic gates and a monumental example of medieval military architecture. The massive structure measures 25 meters in depth, 72.25 meters in width, and 24 meters in height. The current development project in the Bab Zuweila area includes the enhancement and restoration of 135 building façades in the Al-Roum and Al-Khayamiya neighborhoods, as well as the refurbishment of other historically significant buildings in good or moderate condition. In addition, 19 archaeological structures are being restored, unused lands and open spaces are being repurposed, and 63 new residential and commercial units are being established, with some existing buildings having their functions adapted to better serve the area’s revitalization.
