The Giza Zoo, located in Giza Governorate, occupies land that was once part of the Giza Saray Gardens. Originally used as a botanical garden to supply Khedive palaces with trees and plants, the grounds hosted some of the rarest flora from around the world. Today, the zoo is home to a wide variety of mammals, birds, and reptiles, displayed across fourteen sections that represent around 360 different species. These include over a hundred types of snakes—poisonous, semi-venomous, and non-venomous—as well as turtles, lizards, Egyptian and American crocodiles, gerbils, hedgehogs, scorpions, and chameleons. Beyond its role as a public attraction, the zoo also functions as a scientific institute where researchers study the behavior of animals and birds.
